Keratin aftercare, and what happens after 3 months.
Keratin aftercare decides what happens after 3 months of keratin treatment: keep to your stylist's wash window, use sulfate-free shampoo, and the smoothing fades slowly as your natural texture returns over three to six months. A keratin treatment at OLLIN Beverly Hills is $400–500. Book online or call (424) 204-9095.
Do I really need to wait 3 days to wash hair after keratin?
Only if your formula is a traditional one, which needs 48 to 72 hours before the first wash. Those treatments are sealed with a flat iron and keep setting after you leave, so washing, sweating heavily or tying your hair up in that window can leave dents and shorten the result. Some formulas are rinsed out in the salon and allow an earlier wash. Ask your stylist which formula was used and follow the wash window it sets.
Will my hair ever go back to normal after a keratin treatment?
Yes. A keratin treatment is semi-permanent: it coats and seals the outside of the hair rather than rebuilding its inner structure, so the coating washes away and your natural wave or curl comes back, usually over three to six months. Cleveland Clinic puts the outer edge near six months if you don't wash too often. Hair that grows in afterward was never treated. The exception is damage: lengths overheated during the flat-iron step stay changed until they are cut off.
What happens after 3 months of keratin treatment?
After 3 months of keratin treatment the coating is visibly thinning and your natural texture starts to come back. Frizz returns first at the roots, where new growth was never treated, and then along the lengths as each wash removes more of the coating. Humidity shows again, and blow-drying takes longer. This is when many people book a repeat; Brazilian Blowout's own FAQ says its treatment lasts 10 to 12 weeks with its aftercare. If your hair still feels smooth, waiting longer means less heat on the same lengths.
Why is my hair still frizzy even after a keratin treatment?
The usual causes are washing too soon, the wrong shampoo, or a formula built to soften frizz rather than straighten. Sulfates, salt water and chlorine strip the coating early. Hair that is bleached or very porous can take the treatment unevenly, so dry ends frizz first. A softening formula is meant to calm frizz while your wave stays, so some movement is the intended result. A blow-dry with a smooth brush still finishes the look, and if frizz stays after the first few weeks, ask the salon what was applied.
Which is better for hair, biotin or keratin?
For frizz, keratin is the better choice; biotin helps hair only if your body is short of it. Keratin is the protein your hair is made of, and a salon keratin treatment smooths the outside of strands you already have. Biotin is vitamin B7, and a 2017 review of the medical literature found it helped hair only in people with a deficiency or an underlying condition. The FDA also warns that high-dose biotin supplements can distort lab tests, including a heart-attack test. For frizz, book keratin; for thinning, see a dermatologist first.
Can smoothening and keratin be done together?
No, not on the same day. Smoothening, like rebonding, uses chemicals that break and reset the hair's internal bonds, while keratin seals a coating onto the surface with heat, and stacking both on one appointment can leave hair brittle and prone to breaking. If you want to switch from one to the other, let the first grow out or wear off, and ask for a strand test before the second.
Most keratin trouble starts in the first week. Sleep on silk, skip ties and clips, and wash with sulfate-free shampoo; our keratin treatment page covers how to sleep on it, what it costs and how it compares with a Brazilian Blowout. If you were looking for one wash's worth of smooth hair, a blowout is $85–125. Book at our Beverly Hills salon, 8912 W Olympic Blvd, Tuesday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm.
